The natural things in this world are truly some of the most beautiful ones you will ever get to see in your lifetime. The picturesque sky, splendid mountain ranges, sparkling blue ocean, amazing animals and creatures are just few of the countless forms of nature that have never failed to mesmerize us and leave us bewildered.

But just as fascinating and wonderful are the things that men have created and crafted with the  talents and skills that they are blessed with,. Man made marvels such as wrist watches for example have always been a proof of man’s excellence in craftsmanship and artistry.

These watches, which come in a variety of styles, colors, materials, shapes and brands, have been for many decades a part of almost every person’s wardrobe. This is not only because of their stylish quality and ability to add flair and sophistication to one’s look but more importantly because of their practical use of telling time and helping us manage time more efficiently.

In order for us to appreciate watches as  true marvels of innovation and to understand the energy and time poured into crafting these watches, it is a good idea to learn about the different kinds of watches available. Knowing this will also help us greatly when shopping for watches.

Watches are classified according to these different categories:

    1. Gender. The most common way to classify watches is to categorize them as either mens or womens watches. Mens watches often have larger faces, and wider and longer straps. Womens watches are often simpler in terms of features and smaller in size. Of course, there are also unisex watches that can be worn by both men and women.

    2. Style and Function. Another popular way of distinguishing watches is according to their style and features. Some of the most favored styles include:

    * Jewelry watches. These types of watches which are also sometimes called dress or accessory watches include diamond and gold watches. These timepieces are mostly worn during social gatherings and formal occasions, and complement formal suits and dresses very well.

    * Designer watches. These watches bear the name of their original watch designer. Examples of such watches are Swiss Watches that carry the names of popular Swiss watchmakers such as Frederique Constant, Vasheron Constantin, and Patek Philippe. This term also applies to watches that have the names of Gucci, Dunhill, Cartier, Calvin Klein and Versace.

    * Sports watches such as navy and diving watches. Watches used for sports are durable, impact resistant and include features such as waterproofing and a stopwatch that can be utilized during the sport.

    * Gadget watches otherwise known as gizmos or smart watches are a new breed of watches that incorporate modern technological advancements into the timepiece. These watches commonly include a PDA or MP3 player. Technology is the name of the game with these watches as these kinds are the ones that are being collected by techno-addicts.

    * Novelty watches. These are specifically designed for people who are looking for something out of the ordinary. These watches with unusual designs are mostly aimed towards teenagers who are always searching for something unique and exciting to express their youth and individuality.

    3. Brand. Since some people prefer to look at brand names more than style and function, this has also become another popular way of categorizing watches. When shopping for watches especially fine watches, checking the brand is a smart practice because this says a lot about a watch’s durability and quality. Reliable brands such as Seiko or Swiss Mountaineer which have been respected in the watch industry for a long time will assure you of a high quality timepiece that will not suddenly break apart after a brief time.

    4. Age. When it comes to age, there are brand-new, vintage and antique watches. Most watch collectors all over the world go for antiques while the common watch wearers prefer classic styles that are brand new.

    5. Price. When classified according to price, you have a choice among discount watches (for those who have a limited budget), mid-range watches (for those who are not willing to spend a little) and luxury watches which are the most expensive kind. There are also wholesale watches for those who are thinking of putting up a watch store.

Some basic shopping tips for a watch buyer:

    ·         Go for reliable and authentic brands. These may be the more expensive choice but the quality and durability you will get from these are truly a worthy investment. It’s wise to ensure that you only buy from authorized brand dealers..

    ·         Consider shopping online. This is not only convenient but can also save a lot of your time. Be sure that when you do your online shopping, you only buy from accredited online stores, study shipping and return policies, and inspect the product upon delivery.

    ·         Take into account your nature of work and type of lifestyle. This way, you will be able to choose specific features that will be of great use to your occupation or hobbies.

    ·         Look into your closet before buying a watch. Look for a watch that will complement the type of clothing  you mostly wear.

    ·         Buy a watch that you feel you will be comfortable wearing. It’s not recommended that you buy a watch if you’re doubtful whether you can pull it off or not. It may just end up being stuck in your watch box for a long time and turn out to be a waste of your money.
    ·         Be sure that you get the right size. The rule in buying watches is to complement the size of the face and the band to your wrist and hand. If you have a very small wrist, it’s not a pretty sight to don an overly large faced watch and vice-versa.

Knowing the many different kinds of watches not only equip you with highly useful knowledge but also will help you make the right decision during your watch shopping.
