When Did Watches Become Jewelry?
When one wears a watch, when does he or she go beyond wearing it for pragmatic reasons and transcend into the world of jewelry? Are watches still watches? Have they become exclusively jewelry? These questions have been raised as we society has moved into a time of shallow thinking, of empty-minded superficiality. With everyone so caught up in the fads of the time, in impressing her neighbor, in outdoing his boss, it is difficult to decide what is really practical and what is just really radical.
With worlds of shopping available at online jewelry auctions, it is easier than ever to get Breitling replica watches or other jewelry pieces that you have been wanting for so long. But when do you leave all real use and practicality behind? The answer to these questions lies in the purpose with which one sports such an item.
From Brietling watches to replica Rolex watches, even the brand names have truly come to trivialize the watch industry. The Swiss company of Brietling is a Certified Chronometer manufacturer. They produce their watches with aviation in mind. Or they once did. Their watches, with numerous aviation tools, were once produced with that practical idea in mind. With the idea of creating a watch which was useful in that activity. A watch that will actually, physically have some purpose.
Now however, the chronograph functions of the high end brand have become nothing more than a status symbol, presenting the wearer’s ability to afford such fancy things, even if they have no idea what all those little circles and numbers mean. And Brietling itself has started catering to this prodigal pompousness. This watch, once a practical tool, a useful tool when flying, has fallen into the world of high end jewelry. HOWEVER, there are those individuals out there who truly implement the Brietling for what it should be made for: aviation.
Now Rolex. Ah, Rolexes. Got to love them, right? Wrong. Rolex SA is easily the single, largest luxury watch brand. And I mean Luxury watch brand. I do not know what a Rolex is, if it is not a status symbol. From movies to movie stars, to your Uncle Jerry with a yacht, Rolex watches are the definition of status. I am not going to spend a whole lot of time on this one as there is no debate here, ladies and gentlemen; Rolex watches are not worn for practical reasons. It is a given. They are worn to look good. You know what else is worn to look good? Jewelry. End of debate.
Now, for the slightly more sentimental watch-wearer, there’s the old pocket watch that your grandfather gave to you, or the restored Steinhausen that you had perfectly restored. However, these items are worn out of pure sentimentality, not for telling time. Worn just for showing of to friends or merely looking at it in simple fascination. There is nothing wrong with this. A little corniness keeps you healthy. But still, this watch is completely jewelry.
Now to be fair, I have a close friend who is an avid scuba diver. He wears a Rolex Submariner and wears it only when he is diving. Other times, he does not wear a watch. And astronauts have to wear specially tested watches because of extreme conditions encountered in space. Also, diabetic people have watches to keep track of their blood sugar. So there are occasions in which watches are truly practical.
However, we are not all astronauts or scuba divers. Or even diabetic. I don’t even wear a watch. As my cell phone never ever leaves my side, and it happens to have a time-keeping device clearly readable on the front, I simply use that to check time. And I know that most people in this age are the same way about their phone. Especially if one has a particularly addicting device, known as the (crackberry) Blackberry. My point is this. While there are times, and often quite numerous, where a watch is truly functional, where it provides a necessary service, the reality is that most people of today do not wear a watch (whether gotten from a grandfather or from one of numersous jewelry auctions available online) for pragmatic reasons. They wear them for fashionable reasons. Thus, a good ninety percent of the time (maybe eighty-five), watches are truly jewelry.
