What You Must Know About Stun Guns
In the last several years, stun guns have become a very popular method of self defense used by both men and women of all ages. Stun guns are used to deliver a disabling jolt of electricity to a criminal, giving the victim time to escape from the situation without being harmed or having to fight with the criminal to get away. Because stun guns are non-lethal, many more people are comfortable with using a stun gun for personal protection as an alternative to a handgun.
Stun guns come in two basic models from most manufacturers; long range stun guns and short range stun guns. The long range models are the ones that are most often used in law enforcement and provide a stronger electric shock than the short range models. The fact that the stun gun can be used without being close to the criminal is a plus, but the large size of the stun gun means that it cannot be used discretely or carried easily in a pocket or purse.
Short range stun guns are manufactured in much smaller packages and are designed to be carried on the person to be used in the event of an emergency. Although many of these models do not contain as strong of a shock as the long range models, the shock is still strong enough to incapacitate a criminal for a few minutes, which is long enough for the victim to get away from the situation and call the police. The biggest drawback to the short range stun guns is that a person has to be close, generally within arm’s reach, of the criminal for the stun gun to work properly and that is closer than many people are comfortable with.
Many people prefer using a stun gun over a hand gun for personal protection because of the safety issues surrounding hand guns. Because a stun gun is a non-lethal weapon, there is a limited risk of someone being seriously harmed by being accidentally shocked by the stun gun. A child getting a hold of a hand gun could very easily result in the death of the child, while a child mishandling a stun gun will result in a painful shock and a reminder not to handle that object again.
A person is also more apt to use a stun gun at the first sign of danger because they do not have to be concerned will killing the person if they hit them in the wrong area of the body. People that use a hand gun for personal protection will often take a number of lessons on how to shoot properly to be able to disable a target without delivering a lethal shot. With a stun gun, the person doesn’t really have to worry about accuracy because no matter where they hit the target, the electric shock will travel through the body disrupting the control of the muscles and disabling the target for a limited amount of time. This allows the person to act without hesitation if they believe that their life is in danger.
